Updated: Mar 2, 2019

The story of your engagement will be shared so many times, you need to make sure it is one worth telling. You are probably looking for a way to make it perfect and the good news is, there is no right or wrong way to do it and the more personal it is, the better.

We love planning weddings, but you need to pop the question first! We totally want to to help you crush this so; here is our comprehensive guide to an unforgettable proposal.

Before Anything - Read The Room

Marriage is a BIG deal and understanding if the timing is right for both of you is the most important part of a successful proposal. Take some time and talk with your partner about the future and know if marriage would be something they want, you can maybe even get some ideas from them to help you in the next steps!! If getting approval from the family is going to be important make sure to do that early on and when the time comes and you'll have their help to pull it off!

The Three Basic Ingredients Every Proposal Must Have

1.) The ASK - Put some thought into what you are going to say during "the ask". Put down all the reasons why you can't wait to spend forever together onto a piece of paper and work from there, you don't have to write a big speech but say something meaningful and speak from the heart.

When it comes to getting down on one knee and other traditions, it is totally up to you to decide how much you want to incorporate. This article from The Engagement Ring Bible has all the details about the traditions surrounding proposing so you can make an informed decision.

2.) The PHOTOS - Hire a photographer or have a reliable friend ready to make sure you capture everything. You will be so glad to have the memories to look back on. The benefit of having someone else capture the photos is you can focus on the moment and just enjoy being there.

3.) The PERSONAL TOUCH - Every couple is different and you should make sure your proposal is unique to your relationship, you shouldn't try to copy your friends or a romantic speech you saw in a movie. Being authentic to who you are is what is going to truly make this moment so special. Think about incorporating activities that you like to do together or re-visiting places where you have had your best memories.

Taking It To The Next Level (If you would like to step your game up)

For creating something truly unforgettable we have a few tips up our sleeves from planning all kinds of memorable events. If becoming engaged is something that you want to do and not just a question you want to ask, it has to be about the whole experience.

Pro Tip #1: Plan ahead! If you want to make sure everything is perfect, have a good plan and a good backup. There are always variables to consider and you should be prepared for things like traffic and weather. That hot air ballon ride won't be so much fun in the rain.

Pro Tip #2: Location is so important. Avoid holidays and hotspot locations to avoid unwanted interruptions, overcrowding, long lines, higher pricing, and so much more. We do think you should put a lot of time in to picking the right place; it should be magical and memorable and its a total bonus if it has personal significance to your relationship.

Pro Tip #3: If you are planning a surprise, do you best to make sure the recipient of said surprise is looking and feeling their best. All eyes will be on them, including yours! Don't forget to look your best as well, your s.o. may care about you and love you, but start your future off on the right foot and in a clean shirt.
